Political Christians

Did you ever notice that many Christians become far more vocal about their favorite political candidate than they ever do about Jesus? It indicates a greater passion for a politician than for Jesus.
Throughout history, the church has gotten in bed with the state for the purpose of advancing it's own agenda. Every time the church has gained political influence and power, it has lost it's focus, resulting in a loss of spiritual influence and power.
This same scenario has been playing out year after election year in America. What is worse, this political posturing is tearing the people of God apart. There are red Christians and blue Christians that are no longer displaying a unity in Christ, but are divided along secular political lines. Strife has entered the body of Christ through secular politics, directly opposing the prayer of Jesus in John 17 that we would all be one. Of course, until our passion for Jesus replaces our passion for political candidates, there probably isn't much hope for unity.

Comments:
I actually wrote up some thoughts on this back in 1994. My solution: christians just shouldn't be involved in politics at all. Don't vote, don't stump, don't get involved. Politics is a man-made, satan-inspired system of governing people. It's not the job of the believer to shake things up in government, because the government isn't our kingdom.

Here's my post on the subject, written about this time two years ago.

oops. 2004, not 1994.

jovial cynic,
Thanks for your comment! I read your article on your site. Your thoughts on democracy reminded me of a statement by Alexander Frazer Tyler, English historian from the 1700s.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess (generous benefits) from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by dictatorship.
"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from great courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back to bondage."

Dear brother Carman:

What an interesting observation you make with Christians. I myself am a practicing Christian, but it doesn’t mean we’re to roll over and let the unscrupulous politicians have their way with our Constitution or force their ungodly agendas on our nation. Along with prayer, we must stand up as Christians, as never before, and let our voices be heard--least we lose more rights and liberties. I don’t believe in partial birth abortion or homosexuality; we’re to love all people, but not sin. The FCC now wants to bring back the Fairness Doctrine and should it pass, you won’t have a church one on television. I don’t know what it’s going to take to wake you up, but many seem to be aware of what you’re not aware of.

Perhaps you can enlighten us as to what you believe as a Christian?
